Chrysalis

Changing lives through jobs

Tens of thousands of men and women are homeless in the Los Angeles area. Retaining a job is just as critical as finding a job, and many don’t have the resources or knowledge of where to start. Without the support to retain a job, the cycle of homelessness and poverty continues.

The solution

Believing that the single most important step on the path out of poverty is obtaining and retaining a job, Chrysalis provides the resources and support necessary for homeless and low-income individuals to create a path of self-sufficiency. Their core curriculum is designed to improve job search skills, self-confidence, and employability. Each year, more than 21,000 hours of job prep classes are conducted and well over 5,000 sessions of resume writing and practice interviews occur. These services are anchored by the one-on-one support that Chrysalis provides through Employment Specialists who help clients identify needs, set goals, and access additional resources. Chrysalis programs focus on empowering individuals to transition permanently out of homelessness and poverty.

The Story

Since 1984, Chrysalis has been celebrating the successes of over 55,000 clients. Each time a client lands a job, they have the honor of ringing the organization’s Success Bell. A symbol of pride and accomplishment associated with obtaining a job, the reverberating clang motivates staff and clients alike to focus and stay true to their mission.

When folks come to Chrysalis most are homeless or unstably housed (73 percent) with varied backgrounds, but they all share the hope for a second chance. For clients with significant barriers to employment, Chrysalis’ Transitional Jobs Program delivers marketable experience and occupational skills while providing a closely supervised, supportive working environment that allows clients to prove themselves as reliable, capable workers. These 12-month, paid job opportunities help stabilize clients while they simultaneously continue to work on a job search with the support of their Employment Specialist. The ultimate goal is to ensure a successful transition to outside employment and long-term job retention.
