The chronically impoverished face numerous critical needs in addition to long-term obstacles related to poverty. More than temporary handouts, individuals and families need crisis care in concert with programs that uphold their dignity and personal responsibility, helping them with a hand up out of poverty.
United Against Poverty (UP) seeks to help the chronically impoverished transform their lives by providing highly subsidized groceries, crisis care, and opportunities for education and employment. Recognizing that getting food on the table is a top priority for families, UP works to sustainably address hunger and poverty with a grocery share and supportive programming. Their food service allows families who are at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty line gain access to groceries at less than 35 percent the price of traditional grocery stores. UP also offers wrap-around services to help initiate a path to economic self-sufficiency. Clients can receive assistance to assess their emotional, financial, and educational needs. Available classes include money management, nutrition, employment skills, computer literacy, and healthy relationships.
Austin and Ginny Hunt both grew up knowing the reality of financial difficulties. Through their personal journeys navigating hardship, they both cultivated a passion for helping those in need with necessities during times of crisis, as well as extend opportunities toward a bright, stable future.
In 2014, 14 percent of U.S. households (17.4 million households) were food insecure, and 5.6 percent of U.S. households (6.9 million households) had very low food security. With a vision to empower the chronically impoverished and prevent the generational passage of situational poverty, UP is committed to helping people lift themselves out of poverty.

United Against Poverty is a 2016 Stand Together Foundation Catalyst. Through participation in the Catalyst Program, UP receives training from industry experts in organizational development, branding, measurement and growth, and strategic relationships to amplify their impact and strategically expand their reach.
